Top 10 Low Pass Fly Bys

    A buddy sent this linky:

    http://biertijd.com/mediaplayer/?itemid=19448*

Tom Cruise starts off with a film extract from Top Gun ...

    Something else !
Pay particular attention to the # 1 low pass. It happened during a Blue Angles event over San Francisco several years ago
It was the pilots last show with the team and he had nothing to lose.
Many of the boats in the bay lost windows. It was a kick in the ass to watch.

....Incredible...really thought the KC135 4 engined tanker going low over the desert was incredible...considering it has a HUGE deficit in power to weight ratios over the fast movers...and it looked like it was about 30 feet off the deck... Not a lot of room for correction should the 5hit hit the fan

    WOW...spectacular!

I thought the KC (?) fly-by was going to be hard to beat, and I'd seen the F-18 boom-splasher before from another 'angel' before. But this angle was better.

But the KC was actually scarier.

I wish my dad was still alive, just so I could watch him try not to smile while he was telling me how those guys should be busted wingless.

Very kool. Thanks. Now I'm gonna watch 'em again. And probably again.

    Thanks!! That was cool.

I am still hoping Mountain Home and/or Gowen Field (Idaho) get some F-35's in addition to the A10's and F15's we have now.

Of course there are the few complainers about additional noise. That "noise" is the sound of Freedom to me :-)

I was actually at this show (Miramar 2008) and saw the flyby at 1:30

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08G4z63PShc

But as fun as the low and loud passes are, nothing in my experience compares to the full F-22 Raptor tactical demo. Makes your head spin.

They do those low flybys at Fleet Week San Francisco every year. Search YouTube for "Blue Angel low fly by San Francisco" and you can find a few dozen clips (some taken from aboard the ships in the Bay with the jets barely 100 feet away) from various years.

Altho, you should take many of the descriptions with a grain of salt; they are most definitely NOT supersonic passes, as most of the people posting the clips would have you believe. They open the airshow at Edwards Air Force Base with a high-altitude supersonic pass with two F-16s.... and the jets have to be up around 35,000 feet to ensure that no damage is done from the sonic shocks. The Blues are absolutely not going to be doing supersonic passes in the San Francisco Bay directly over civilians. They get enough grief from the local government (who, annually, airs some protest or other about the military's presence in 'Frisco...) they aren't about to aggravate things by blowing out 5,000 windows. (<-- deliberate exaggeration)

Fleet Week SF is also the second or third week of October every year (it's traditionally the Blues' next show after Miramar) and there's another month to go in their season at that point, so it's unlikely that this was this particular aviator's last flight with the team. (Altho, if the pilot had broken any safety rules, it would almost undoubtedly have been his last flight in the Navy.....)

We were up there for fleet week a few years back and sat up on the hill on the other side of the bay, it was awesome because the Blue Angles would pass by low setting up for the maneuvers. I loved it!

And I agree the Raptor is something else it is one of my favorites to see.

Fleet Week is usually EARLY in October. The Blue Angels will fly there before the Miramar show next year. I seem to remember a couple of years ago the Blue Angels finished the season with only 5 planes in the show because one of the pilots was involved in a relationship with a woman in the organization. Supposedly.

I also remember the local uproar a couple of years ago about a sonic boom during the show and several claims of broken windows. I don't know if the plane actually broke the barrier to do so, or not. But what was the cloud of vapour surrounding the fuselage of the Hornet that is commonly associated with "punching through" the sound barrier ?

All, the pic in my avie was taken in San Antonio a few years ago and you can see the vapor in that one too! That plane is going close to mach, .99 according to the show announcer, so that vapor must come from the humidity?

Planes are making their own clouds!

My dad joined the Army Air Corps as soon as he got out of high school (he skipped two grades in school, so he may have been 16 years old). WWII had started, and he flew B-24s during the war. He also flew B-17s, I think. I know he flew P-51s ( he jumped out of one and was lost for awhile and I got my picture on the front page of the LA TImes ) and my uncle says he flew P-40s. I also remember he flew F-86s. He flew F-100s ( he escorted the Thunderbirds around Europe one season when we lived there ). I think he flew F-104s, and my uncle says the F-105 broke his heart because the AF said he technically was too tall to fly it.

I know he shuttled planes around the US for awhile, so he probably flew others. He told me once about diving supersonic over the desert and pulling up to watch the dust plume donut spread across the ground until they noticed an old miner's shack too late and it kinda disappeared.

He flew with a bunch of guys who became astronauts ( I was told he would have been one if he'd been to college before he enlisted ), like Aldrin and Grissom and others. I used to play with Ed White's kids. He flew with a guy named Yaeger. He was stationed near Houston in the 60s and things were happening that I took for granted, but we watched all the Mercury and Gemini launches on TV. I didn't know how kool it was until it was over....

The older I get, the more I wish he was still around. He didn't talk alot about the stuff he did right after he retired, although sometimes during a pre-restriction lecture an anecdote would be used as an example.....he started to open up a bit and then he got cancer.

The Mirimar show last October was quite cool humid. The crowds love it.

Time to cue up the "controversial" United 747 flyby of the Golden Gate bridge at this year's Fleet Week, because that was SWEET. (I saw the Blue Angels doing their thing, but was way out in Burlingame and did not see the airliner)

And while not quite the subject of the thread, the 707 prototype (the Dash 80) doing a barrel roll at the SeaFair festival in 1954 was LOLtacular.
