Looking forward to seeing the Atlantics on my favourite Northeastern Road Course. My photographer will be at the All Star Luncheon too.
Will you be there?

I don't believe I can make it.
Just kidding, I have been waiting for CART/Champ Car or Atlantic to race at Road Atlanta since the last professional Atlantic event here in the early 90s. I'll be there Friday and Saturday for sure.

EVERYBODY!
The Petit Le Mans actually runs on Saturday. Has done for 10 years (this is its 11th year).

It's going to be an amazing week of racing. Come by the VW tent and say hi...hopefully i'll be farther up the standings by then :o

Definitely going to Petit. NOT TO BE MISSED!!! And I'll hit that little town called Alpine Helen too, it has a really fun Octoberfest. What a crazy little town it is, it's worth the drive to see it. The whole place is like a Disney ride. Hopefully I can find some of Dr. Panoz' wines because brewskis and I do not get along (although I happily buy them for others wearing their CC gear - no underagers please - I do not need the extra $10 being offered outside of beer tents)!!. Seriously, any suggestions on where to buy Chateau Elan vino would be much appreciated. If I can't find it, I will have to bring a bottle of Irony merlot. Gotta love a good bottle of Irony.

PoplarPal, are you going to make it to the Atlantic race on Friday afternoon, or are you getting in too late?

I will definitely be there to see the Atlantics. I am leaving Wednesday night and will see if I can watch practice etc. Any idea how far it is to drive from Braselton to Helen?? I even got new tires for the occasion - went with COOPER because of their support of the Atlantics.

Sure, it's from 40 minutes to an hour, depending on your driving style and any possible traffic given the two-lane roads. See directions here (http://maps.live.com/#JnJ0cD1wb3MucHBycmhkODBnMGc5X1JvYWQrQXRsYW50YSsoc mFjZXRyYWNrKSUyYytHZW9yZ2lhJTJjK1VuaXRlZCtTdGF0ZXN fX19fJTdlcG9zLnBzaHIwOTgwbm0yY19IZWxlbiUyYytXaGl0Z SUyYytHZW9yZ2lhJTJjK1VuaXRlZCtTdGF0ZXNfX19fJnJ0b3A 9MCU3ZTA=).

That's great. I have always enjoyed supporting sponsors. Just did another Bridgestone Potenza purchase, love those tires. How are the Coopers? Are they "Xeons?"

Thanks Jay. Those directions will come in very handy. The Coopers are great. I would highly recommend them. Nice feel. I am so ready for those mountain roads in Northern Georgia now!!! And my old tires will be donated to a good track which is in need of a tirewall barrier.

I have had to cancel my trip to Road Atlanta because I cannot find any way to get from the airport to the track.
I will save up over the year and pay the $300 for the Chateau Elan limo next year (which is only $100 less than my round trip airfare from Toronto) as that is the only option there is if you cannot drive and your friends hope someone else will do it...
Have fun y'all and see you next year.

And you couldn't ask the most visible member of this forum from Atlanta? I would have arranged a ride for you, whatever it took.

Too late now as I have cancelled everything. But do give me a good report on what goes on, and if you see my photographer Craig Elliott you might tip him off on where to get gas. He says at his place it's almost impossible to get.
Maybe next year we can work something out. It's always the most difficult part of the whole race experience, just getting to the track. One year there was a shuttle service that worked just fine; the next year its phone was disconnected and this year although it was still listed on the Hartsfield website, the number went to a guy at HP who was not at all amused.

It's horrible trying to find gas. On Saturday, my wife waited 6 hours across town at one gas station while I waited 2 hours at another. That's if you can even find a station that thinks they'll get a shipment on a given day.
+++politics edited...+++ But I think to the people who actually make it to Petit and back, the Green / Alternative message of the weekend (the ALMS teams' side competiton) may have a mental impact. ALMS couldn't have known, but it's a good weekend to try that message in Atlanta, GA.

Jay, how is the gas situation at the moment? Is it any better near the track than near downtown? Just curious on what to expect when I get in tomorrow.

The last thing I want to do is scare anybody away from what I of course consider one of the greatest racing events of the year - especially with Atlantics - but it's bad. I still heard 4 days minimum before normalcy. After I wrote my last post, my employee called in saying he couldn't find gas and he lives relatively near the track. It took him 2 hours.
I think it's better downtown because the further you go out, the fewer people use MARTA and the harder it is for trucks to get there. I only live like 6 miles from downtown and at least I found some.
We will see, it should be 'interesting' with bigger crowds in town and near the track. HOPE everything is normal by then.

Well, I figure at least if the rental car has a full tank leaving the airport, should be good for a couple days. Thanks for the info :)

There were several gas stations at the I-85 exit to Road Atlanta that all had gas, at least they did late morning when I was there. But the Chevron was empty...

No problems on the coast and I'm not hearing of any problems as you move inland on major highways/interstates. Definitely supply issues make the overall message of this event that much stronger.
