"You never know when the turbo is going to kick in so you have to be ready for the oversteer!"

Anyone care to comment on this statement for the technically challenged fans.

Since your not one of those technically challenged fans, or so you say, why don't you speak up and tell us already.

I can't hear you! :drummer:

No, I'm asking as a technically challenged fan..

Also, it's "you're" and not "your". I'm not grammatically challenged. :)

kind of interesting comment, eh? You would think that the turbo would have a predetermined point in which it would kick in. 2000 rpm or some such number.

I suppose if it's not something you're used to it would seem odd and out of sorts. I recall other drivers also commenting about the turbo having quite the kick. I can't recall them saying it caused oversteer tho'. :)

It takes a few seconds for the turbo to spool up as the revs climb. As the Turbo is propelled by the exhaust gasses passing threw one side, the higher the RPM’s the faster the exhausted gasses and the faster the turbo spins. The faster the turbo spins the more boost and that’s equals more power. Turbo lag is one of the down sides of using a turbo charged engine. But considering the low boost and the relatively really small turbo lag really shouldn’t be an issue.

I would think it would be fairly consistent once you figure it out, but there are a number of conditions that affect it so keeping tabs on all of them would be the trick.

I would think he is just not used to it. I would guess with more seat time, he will know exactly when it will kick in.

in other words, the car seems loose in the corners to him

I would imagine that if you're not ready for it and you're travelling in a straight line, you'd still possibly snap around from the torque kicking in. just a WAG...

I'm guessing what he means is that as he gets on the gas on corner exit, the turbo was suprising him a bit and the car was oversteering on corner exit. You often see CC's doing that on bumpy courses, especially on cold tires.

I'm sure it would take some getting used to, as it would react differently depending on how the throttle is applied, the speed the car is travelling at the time, road conditions, gear selection, etc. It's one reason I admire Champ Car drivers so!

The part that catches noobs out is that, as has been pointed out, the turbo feeds off of engine exhaust, which is a function of engine RPM. The fun bit is that if you get wheelspin after the turbo has kicked in, you are effectively increasing the boost. So it can really get out of hand in a hurry for an inexperienced driver.

which is, I'm sure, what caused speedy dan to do his windshield washer trick at cleveland a couple of years ago!

When you're spinning your wheels from the apex of one corner to the braking point of the next, you've got enough horsepower. :burnout:

I think that was a case of complete lack of thinking and self control; he got on the gas harder than he should have when he saw MD trying to repass him, and what happened after that was one of the bizarest events I have ever seen at any race, with him completly losing any semblance of self control with him matting the throttle until he stalled it, pounding on the steering wheel. I remember watching that in disbelief and anger as the Dale Coyne crew members across from me looked absoltuely gutted. I felt bummed the whole way home for Mario D and DCR, we had been cheering them on the whole race and somehow they were about to finish 2nd to have it taken away on the last lap.
